Apartment Moving Day Checklist
A renter moving-day checklist: utilities, keys, condition photos, elevator reservations, and the first 48 hours after you get the keys.
Moving day is a logistics problem, not a decorating problem. Lock utilities, document condition before boxes explode everywhere, and leave the old place broom-clean with proof.
Proration, early access, and deposit return timing vary by state and local jurisdiction. This guide is educational — not legal advice. Confirm requirements with local counsel or your housing authority before relying on any deadline, notice form, or deposit rule.
72 hours before the truck
Pre-move
- Confirm elevator / loading dock reservation windows
- Transfer or start electric, gas, water, internet, and trash service
- File USPS change of address and update bank/payroll addresses
- Pack an essentials bag: meds, chargers, toilet paper, snacks, tools
- Measure sofas and mattresses against doorways and elevators
At the new unit — before unpacking
- Walk every room with your phone video recording open cabinets and closets.
- Photograph meter readings, existing damage, and appliance serials if visible.
- Test water pressure, drains, outlets, locks, windows, and HVAC modes.
- Collect all keys, fobs, remotes, and mailbox numbers in one labeled pouch.
- Send a dated condition email to the landlord with photo links attached.
At the old unit — exit cleanly
Move-out exit
- Remove personal items from storage cages and parking
- Wipe appliances, bathrooms, and floors per lease cleaning standard
- Take final empty-unit photos after cleaning
- Return keys/fobs and get a written receipt if possible
- Leave a forwarding address for deposit correspondence
Label boxes by room and priority (“open first”). The fastest way to miss a leak is to bury the water heater closet under winter clothes.
